Slippery elm bark is harvested from the tree and the high mucilage content results in the “slippery” factor. A primary slippery elm bark benefit includes being used as a soothing agent for sore throats and coughs when used as a tincture, tea or throat lozenge. Slippery elm bark powder can be used to make soothing ointments, lotions, creams and other topical preparations for the skin. Slippery elm bark powder can also be encapsulated as a dietary supplement or combined with hot water, cinnamon and sugar to make a gruel, or hot cereal.
Precautions
Slippery Elm should be taken with at least 250mL (8 oz) of liquid. Orally administered drugs should be taken one hour prior to or several hours after consumption of slippery elm. The mucilage may slow the absorption of orally administered drugs. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
